Driving Up the Mt Lemmon Highway - The Most Scenic Road in the Southwest?
The Santa Catalina Highway, otherwise known as the Mt. Lemmon Highway, the Sky Island Scenic Byway, and the General Hitchcock Highway, is said to be one of the most scenic drives in the Southwest. The road climbs from the Sonoran Desert in Tucson, Arizona to over 9,000 feet in elevation at the top of Mt. Lemmon, offering amazing views along the way.
When we started the day, there was an excessive heat warning in Tucson, with the temperature well over 100 degrees. As we climbed the mountain the temperature began to drop and it was around 30 degrees cooler by the time we got to the top.
Along the way we traveled through a number of different biological environments. They say the drive is equ...

The Daley family owned the ranch land for over 100 years, but in the 1980s they worked with an oil company to develop the property with the plan to build ove...
Abandoned and Forgotten Highway Stops in the Mojave Desert
Просмотров 109 тыс.Месяц назад
Halloran Springs and Halloran Summit (also known as Yucca Grove) were long stops for travelers heading through the Mojave Desert, dating back over a thousand years. As roads were built through the desert, these settlements became important stops on those early highways as people traveled between Southern California and Las Vegas. Eventually, the roads became U.S. State Route 91 and later Inters...

Is This Art? - Visiting Double Negative in the Nevada Desert
Просмотров 53 тыс.Месяц назад
Outside of Moapa Valley, Nevada, about an hour and a half from Las Vegas, is a piece of land art known as Double Negative. This strange art piece sits atop Mormon Mesa and was created in 1969 by the artist Michael Heizer. Art is subjective, and Double Negative probably tests the limit of what is art. It consists of a trench dug into the earth, that is 30 feet wide, 50 feet deep, and 1500 feet l...

The ghost town of Budville, New Mexico is like a lot of small towns that were bypassed by the interstate. The streets are empty and the businesses are long-closed. The town's real tragedy came in 1967 though. In November 1967, the founder of the town, Bud Rice, and an elderly employee of the Budville Trading Company were murdered in cold blood, just feet away from Route 66. Four years later, th...

I’m always blown away at videos like these. Mentioned it’s only 20 years done that was abandoned. It really shows how we and the thing we build are just temporary on this planet, without maintenance- the earth begins to cover it all up with vegetation. Concrete slabs, tanks, structures, it just ultimately gets taken over by nature.

Really nice views. But wanted rmto let you know the ski lift is not that slow during ski season, it goes much faster as at the end, when getting off the lift with skis on, it helps push you out of the way and make room for the next skiers to get off behind you. But it's going much slower to enable you to get off the lift more slowly and safely so it won't push you.

Heartbreaking to see the cafe like this. I photographed it several times when, as a previous commenter says, it looked as if it was just shut up for the night, napkins on tables, coffee jugs on the counter... The whole town was sold a year or so ago, so see what's there while you can because it could be a modern truck stop next time you're there.
